Program Associate
START DATE: August 2022

JOB DESCRIPTION
Jahajee Sisters is seeking a Full-Time Program Associate to support programs we provide for our core constituents: Indo-Caribbean women, girls, and gender expansive people in New York's Indo-Caribbean community. The Program Associate will support the organization to create annual program plans that meet our overall strategic goals; help adjust programs for the evolving needs of the organization as we move toward centering working class and young people in our work. They will manage program logistics, support design and facilitation, and also create evaluation mechanisms to help measure our impact and success in meeting objectives. 

RESPONSIBILITIES
Indo-Caribbean Women’s Empowerment Summit (Annual) 
  • Support with all logistics for the Summit, including researching and securing vendors 
  • Support with event curation: plenaries, keynotes, workshops and arts performances
  • Develop copy for all Summit marketing materials: flyers, programs, etc.  
  • Recruit and manage all volunteers involved with helping at the Summit, including holding regular planning meetings to ensure everyone is on the same page 
  • Solicit workshop proposals from organizations and individuals
  • Outreach to potential business owners and community partners who want to table and promote their product/work at the event 
  • Communicate with confirmed speakers, workshop presenters and artists
  • Monitor ticket sales and numbers of participants we have registered to attend
  • Ensure a smooth, seamless event flow and experience for Summit speakers, presenters, artists and participants

Arts & Activism Residency
  • Work directly with the Arts & Activism Fellow over the first year of their residency 
  • Support with all logistics related to multidisciplinary performances and convening survivors for storytelling workshops (e.g. securing venues, caterers, childcare providers)
  • Recruit and build with community artists/creatives who can be part of performances that are being curated by the fellow 
  • Recruit survivors from our membership for the storytelling workshops and to be part of the performances being curated by the fellow 
  • Support with facilitation of storytelling workshops and additional arts & healing spaces 

Lift Up With Love Speakout (April)
  • Manage this annual event we do in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month to lift up the stories and experiences of survivors in our community 
  • Manage all logistics from securing vendors like venue, caterers and childcare providers 
  • Create marketing materials for the event and help to outreach for it
  • Produce and curate the event by confirming performers and speakers 

PRIDE Arts & Activism Event (June)
  • Manage this annual event we do to celebrate PRIDE Month and create a space for LGBTQ Indo-Caribbean people and allies in our community 
  • Manage all logistics from seuring vendors like venue, caterers and childcare providers 
  • Create marketing materials for the event and help to outreach for it
  • Produce and curate the event by confirming performers and speakers 

Community Circles (Monthly)
  • Support Direct Services Manager with co-design and co-facilitation of this monthly healing and wellness space, with input from our membership regarding themes/content 

Community Outreach (Monthly)
  • Support the Advocacy & Campaign Manager with raising awareness about our programs through tabling, outreach at community events and outreach at faith institutions. 

Membership Meetings (Monthly)
  • Attend monthly membership meetings to build relationships with members and to share updates about upcoming programs we want them to attend and get involved with

Programs Targeted to Youth
  • Help brainstorm, design and facilitate programs specifically targeted to Indo-Caribbean youth, ages 14-21 in our community
  • Support the organization to make current programming accessible to youth 

QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking an individual who has experience coordinating programs for BIPOC communities. Program design and facilitation skills are a plus. The ideal candidate will be:
  • Extremely organized and able to pay attention to details 
  • Highly-motivated and reliable with a strong work ethic
  • A clear and proactive communicator who takes initiative 
  • Able to meet deadlines and see a project through to completion 
  • Able to receive feedback well and adjust/pivot as needed
  • Able to travel and work in Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park, Queens

Other desirable qualifications include: 
  • A commitment to gender justice, racial justice, immigrant rights, and economic justice
  • Understanding of healing and transformative justice methodologies 
  • Experience working with the organization’s core constituencies: women, gender expansive, immigrant and queer Indo-Caribbean people

COMPENSATION
This is a Full-Time position with a salary range of 50-52K depending on experience. It includes benefits (medical, vision and dental). The Program Associate will report to a Co-Director of the organization. This is a one year position with an option for renewal.

Title: Research & Outreach Intern


Hours: 24 hours per week
Timeline: July 5, 2022 - August 31, 2022
Compensation: $2500 stipend

There is limited data on the Indo-Caribbean community in New York City, despite our large population. This lack of information contributes to the neighborhoods we live being underserved. To help fill this gap and make the case for investment into our community, Jahajee Sisters is carrying out the first community needs assessment to focus on Indo-Caribbean women and gender-expansive people in New York City.

​The assessment takes a look at overall needs with a closer look at gender-based violence, housing insecurity, and the connection between the two. The information gathered will be shared with community stakeholders and be used to form policy recommendations. 


We will collect 200 surveys through in-person and phone interviews as well as online surveys. We will reach survey-takers through our existing network as well as in-person outreach. At least four community survey events will be arranged, where a team will conduct interviews.

The Research & Outreach Intern will be responsible for:
Conducting outreach to survey-takers through in person, phone, and text outreach - supported by Advocacy & Campaigns Manager Organize our database of contacts for consistent outreach and follow up  Conducting interviews in person and over the phone, supported by staff and a volunteer team Working with a team of Jahajee staff and board members to generate data analysis Drafting policy recommendations for the issue areas that surface  You will be reporting to and working with Felicia Singh, Advocacy & Campaigns Manager.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following experience and qualities:

-Experience leading and/or working as part of a team to accomplish a shared goal
-Experience and excitement for conducting community outreach in person and/or over the phone
-Highly reliable, motivated, and diligent individual who is accountable to their commitments and demonstrates integrity by completing tasks and meeting deadlines

Highly communicative and transparent regarding work progress, challenges, and evolving needs of their project(s)

Eager to learn and ask questions, seeking feedback and taking feedback seriously in order to sharpen their skills and improve performance
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with Indo-Caribbean community members, especially elders and new immigrants
-Passion for supporting the Indo-Caribbean community to grow its resources, increase its political influence, and flourish
-
Flexible and can adapt to changing circumstances to achieve goals
-Ability to travel to Richmond Hill, Queens
-Commitment to gender justice, racial justice, and immigrant rights
