During the summer of 2010, eight young Indo-Caribbean women, ages 15-25, developed their leadership skills during 4 days of workshops and a weekend retreat, as they explored how our community can achieve the physical, mental, spiritual, social and economic wellbeing of women and girls.

This program supported young women to challenge inequality through a transformative process that links the personal to the political. Participants explored how our choices are limited by being women of color from immigrant families, and how we can take charge of our bodies, our education, our environment, and our lives.

                                Young women:
                                • Gained leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills
                                • Developed an analysis of women’s rights
                                • Created Public Service Announcements incorporating various artistic genres
                                • Conducted an awareness campaign in our community

"YWLI made me more aware of the things going on in my community. The program gave us an opportunity to meet and connect with other females that cared about social change in the Indo-Caribbean community, and because we already had this underlying interest that connected us, I think it further solidified our relationships.  I didn’t know much about community organizing or Reproductive Justice and how it impacted my life before YWLI.  Now that the program is over, I have become more aware of the terms and of organizations both in and out of the Indo-Caribbean community that are working to help people create change for themselves. YWLI was just a first step into this world for me, but it was a great first step that made us all feel secure and like we always had the support of our sisters.  I’m very thankful that this program was created for Indo-Caribbean females because there is nowhere else that we could have had this opportunity."
