Sister Circle gatherings create spaces for Indo-Caribbean women to bond, share our stories, engage in dialogue about issues that are relevant and important to us, and explore ways to create positive change. With great food, amazing women and dynamic conversation, we build lasting relationships and strengthen our community.

Sister Circle gatherings are held on a regular basis, and are hosted by members of Jahajee Sisters.  We aspire to have one Sister Circle gathering per month and need the Jahajee Sisters community to make this a reality by attending, hosting gatherings and supporting with outreach. Please contact us if you are interested in hosting a Sister Circle or would like more information about future gatherings. These are women-only events.

After some time for reflection and strategic planning, Jahajee Sisters is developing an exciting array of Sister Circles for 2011.  Stay tuned for more information and be sure to join us in April for the 2011 kick-off circle!  Below are a few highlights from 2010 Sister Circles.

                                July 18, 2010
This was the first Jahajee Sisters event to be held in the Bronx.  Themed Linking Personal Transformation to Community Change, this gathering supported participants to examine our current ways of functioning so we can move towards our ideal way of being. Together, we focused on creating a life of purpose and a road map to guide the next few years of our lives. Participants worked on improving the quality of our lives by gaining increased clarity, reducing stress and shifting habits to live a more joyful, productive and inspired life.

                                May 21, 2010
Our May Sister Circle featured poetry, prose and music! We welcomed over 30 new and old faces to celebrate Indian Arrival Month and Mother's Day. Together, we honored our powerful lineage and our beloved mothers. A special feature of the evening was activities centered on strengthening dialogue across generations, especially among mothers and daughters.

                                April 17, 2010
Our theme was Going Green, and we focused on recycling. We might know where paper, glass and aluminum go, but what about all the rest? Together, we explored how we can Go Green everyday to reduce our carbon footprint.

                                March 26, 2010
Jahajee Sisters came together to recognize Women's Herstory month, celebrating The Enduring Spirit of Indo-Caribbean Women: our accomplishments, our potential and our rich future. We dialogued about indentureship’s heroines to our everyday warrior women and spoke of the importance of standing up and being counted as part of the 2010 Census.

                                February 20, 2010
For the month of February our theme was Self Love and Empowerment through Healing Mind, Body and Spirit. We learned to align the breath with the daily solar and lunar rhythms through breathwork (pranayama); strengthen our primordial energies with  a few simple but powerful healing postures (yoga asanas). And, explored how a woman's magic is irretrievably linked to lunar rhythms and how a woman’s cycles greatly affects her shakti-prana (Wise Earth's Uttara Vastipractice).  Alicia Jorawar shared the teachings of Swamini Mayatitananda, a world-renowned scholar and spiritual leader.

                                January 8, 2010

We focused on the theme of Education, exploring: (1) continuing education options, and (2) ways to ensure our children are receiving a quality education.  We had over 30 women in attendance and utilized improv theater to surface concerns and stimulate dialogue, and we exchanged resources. A list of resources was generated at this gathering, and they can be found in our January Community Update.

                                December 4, 2010
Jahajee Sisters' first Sister Circle gathering was a great evening with over 30 women in attendance. We explored a range of topics that were on the minds of participants and these topics will be further explored at future gatherings.

“Let’s Talk About Sex-Ed” Sister Circle (SC) on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 2pm. The “Let’s Talk About Sex-Ed” series will focus on sex-ed in our homes, communities and how that connects to our daily lives.

The venue will be shared when you RSVP for the event.

"You know, it took a lot of prodding and poking to get myself to the meeting. This morning I remember the faces warmly...it was a family of women...all of them so cheerful and welcoming.  I was happy to see a mother with her teen daughter. I remember needing that kind of support but there was no where safe like this group.  I would like to see more mothers with their young daughters because I know they need a safety net in this community." (Sister Circle Attendee)
